Campus and Academic Growth
During Chancellor Marye Anne Fox’s tenure, UC San Diego continued its tradition of “achieving the extraordinary,” the theme of her March 2005 inauguration. Recognized as an international leader, the 50-year-old University of California campus infrastructure and academic offerings expanded to meet the scholarly needs of the faculty and students.
Highlights of the progress during Fox’s leadership include:
- Investment in Capital Projects: Since fall 2004, UC San Diego has initiated more than $3.5 billion in capital improvement projects that include new construction, renovation of existing space and infrastructure improvements. Once all projects are completed, the new construction will add about 3.4 million assignable square feet of space at the university, an approximate 40 percent increase in space.
- Expansion in Heart of Campus: Recent construction projects include the creation of a new downtown neighborhood in the heart of campus—with the addition of the Student Services Center, the Conrad Prebys Music Center and the Price Center expansion—and several student graduate and undergraduate housing projects, including the Village at Torrey Pines neighborhood specifically for transfer students. Between 2003 and fall 2011, UC San Diego will have added housing for more than 5,100 students.
- Growth of Health Sciences and Professional School Facilities: In addition to increasing the number of academic programs and research projects on campus, we have also added the necessary facilities for teaching, research and patient care, including the Sulpizio Family Cardiovascular Center, the stem cell joint research facility, and home buildings for the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences and the Rady School of Management.
